MOPED SAFETY:

Though mopeds often appear to be perhaps one of the most safe forms of motorized transportation on the road today, there are actually many hazards involving the operation and use of a moped that are quite often overlooked. As we care and value our customers and their safety, the staff at Bob's Marine Sales And Service would like to offer the following moped safety tips...

1. Be Aware Of Local Moped Laws:
One of the most important elements of properly riding a moped on any public road is the operator's ability to properly obey the local laws. Since such laws vary from location to location, it is important that you check with your local laws before riding your moped on non private roads.

2. Wear Proper Safety Equipment:
Though not required in some areas, it is highly recommended that you wear proper safety equipment. Helmets are perhaps the most important and the best kind is one that has been approved for motorcycle operators. In addition to helmets, gloves are recommended as well as proper footwear. Shorts are not considered to be safe to wear when operating a moped as it can expose the rider's legs to the engine.

3. Read And Understand The Owner's Manual Of Your Moped:
Provided that you purchased a new moped, you should have an owner's manual. If you purchased an older model that did not come with a manual, you should take time to find out more about your specific moped. The owner's manual will cover important facts about your moped and should inform you on how to be a safe operator.

4. Make Sure You Are Visible To Others:
Even if you go out of your way to be a safe moped owner, it's important to consider the fact that your safety also lies in the actions of those who share the road with you. In order to help prevent accidents, it's our responsibility to make sure that you are properly noticed by other motorists. Lights in good condition, along with proper reflectors and perhaps even an orange safety flag will help the rest of the motorists on the road acknowledge your presence. Keep in mind as well that it's important that you avoid areas of heavy traffic or roads where other motorists could be traveling at rates of speeds greater than your moped is capable of. In many areas mopeds are forbidden on public roads where speed limits exceed the top speed of a moped.

5. Perform Routine Inspections:
It's important that you inspect your moped on a regular basis to make sure that everything is in good working order.
